HUGE INTEREST IN DANISH INNOVATION PROJECT

21/04/2006
Carl Bro Group is the first manufacturer in the world to have developed advanced measuring equipment that can check runways for the new giant Airbus A380 airplane.

There is currently huge interest from across the world in a new Danish measuring equipment system that is playing a role in one of the most ambitious aircraft projects in the history of flight, the Airbus A380.

Carl Bro Group is actually the first manufacturer in the world to have developed a system that can measure the load-bearing capacity of runways that will receive the jumbo airliner once it enters into commercial service in earnest during 2006.

Huge investment

Currently, billions of Danish kroner are being invested in the airports included in plans for the new plane, in countries such as France, Germany, the UK, Spain, Singapore and Korea. For this reason, many companies in Europe, Asia and North America are very interested in the measuring equipment. And the first Super Heavy Weight Deflectometers have already been delivered.

Special requirements

“Obviously, the bearing capacity requirements are specific on the runways when the 80 metre wide, 560,000 kg plane impacts the surface at a pressure of over 30 tonnes per wheel. But our equipment is an effective help to contractors, consultancy companies and airports with their planning, construction and maintenance of runways and roller conveyors in order to be capable of receiving Airbus A380.”

Manufactured in Kolding

Carl Bro Group’s department in Kolding has manufactured the equipment, with many years of research having gone into developing and fine-tuning the technology – including developing programs for data analysis, calculation and classifications. Furthermore, during development emphasis was placed on ensuring a high level of user-friendliness so that customers’ employees can use the advanced equipment with ease and interpret the results.

FACTS

The new equipment is a more advanced development of Carl Bro Group’s well-known falling weight deflectometer technology. It can measure bearing capacity and registers the deflection when a surface is subjected to a weight falling onto it. Carl Bro Group currently uses the technology in over 100 Danish municipalities and counties as part of a coordinated system for managing maintenance of the public roads most efficiently and economically. Thanks to development of a super heavy weight deflectometer and specific customisation of the system, it can now also be used to simulate the extreme loads from the largest plane in the world.
